This course runs over four Mondays 7 - 9pm starting 30 July 2019 with Dr Libby Brookbanks.
Trace the foundations of modern art from the innovative style of Impressionism through to the conceptual complexities of Cubism. Learn how artists reacted against social and political norms and discover how artistic discoveries still affect contemporary art and thinking.
What does Cubism contribute to scientific understanding of vision? How were the works of the Impressionist affected by the invention of the camera? Materials are included for the hands-on part of this course.
Expected learning outcomes:
- Understand the significance of the Impressionists response to modern technology
- Understand the impact of Cubist theory on contemporary art and thinking
- Discuss the difference between Cubism and Impressionism
- Create an artwork in the style of either an Impressionist or Cubist master of your choice
Who should attend? Anyone who wants to delve deeper into the insights of impressionism and Cubism. You will also be given the opportunity to make artworks in the style of your favourite Impressionist or Cubist masters.
