Weekend Waananga: Celebrating 160 Years of Te Kiingitanga

Auckland Museum and Waikato-Tainui are coming together to celebrate 160 years of Kiingitanga.

Join us at Silo 6 for some whanau-focused fun, activities and entertainment!

At our Family Day watch performances from some of Aotearoa's best Kapa Haka groups, take part in flag making and collaborative net making space, and visit the food trucks.

There will be four performances starting at 10.30am, a dedicated Kaumaatua Tent for our elders, and family activities creating a wide sharing of connections of the Kiingitanga movement beyond Turangawaewae. Featured in the Silos are expert speakers: Mahana Toka, Reverend Mahaki Albert and Ataahua Papa.

The winners of Te Matatini 2019, Ngā Tūmanako will make a special appearance in their first Auckland Kapa Haka performance since their win. Te Pou o Mangataawhiri, formed in the 1920s by Princess Te Puea Herangi and 2019 Te Matatini Finalist, will also be joining us.

Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th April

Over both days in Silo 6, view the documentary Kiingitanga: The Untold Story, visit the darkened waananga space with historic recordings of waiata, speeches, conversations and commemorations of Kiingitanga.

Don’t forget to visit our groundbreaking exhibition featuring a selection of taonga, from the private collection of Kiingi Tuheitia, the present Maaori king: Te Paki o Matariki: 160 years of Kiingitanga on now until Sunday 5 May.
