Ahi Kaa is the concept of keeping the home fires burning, as well as celebrating the strength of family and community. The Matariki season provides a special opportunity for people to come together during the colder months, helping to create a sense of tūrangawaewae (belonging) and kotahitanga (togetherness).

Come along and write your message to a loved one or send your wish for the future to Hiwa i te rangi, the wishing star and the youngest in the Matariki cluster. Your message/wish will be transformed into nourishment for a native planting for the local community. This will help the environment and create a bond between you and Papatūānuku, reminding us that we need to care for the environment.

Take some time to learn the Waiata Maumahara composed by students of Te Wharekura o Hoani Waititi – the lyrics can be found on the Matariki Festival website (www.matarikifestival.org.nz/matariki/2020/waiata-maumahara). Join us for the singing of the waiata on Tuesday 14 July in the Glen Eden Town Centre, outside Glen Eden Public Library.

Proudly supported by Waitākere Ranges Local Board Local Board.
