Dean Buchanan is one of New Zealand’s best-known artists. From an early age he showed talent, painting large oils that demonstrated both technical brilliance and a close affinity with the natural world. During the past thirty years he has become probably New Zealand’s most prolific (and also most affordable) painter, as well as one of the most instantly recognisable.

His paintings are found in homes throughout New Zealand, in public buildings and galleries both here and overseas. He has also exhibited in Australia, Japan, Chile, Switzerland and the USA. Coupled with his creative talent is an ability to live life to the full. No shrinking violet, 'Wild Beast’ Buchanan has always expressed himself forthrightly, especially in defence of preserving New Zealand’s natural environment. He has also become a mountaineer of some note, and in January 2007 succeeded in climbing Mt Cook. Bob Harvey interviewed Dean Buchanan extensively for this book, and describes every facet of his life. The book also includes sixty reproductions of some of his greatest paintings.

Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Auckland is very pleased to announce that we are exhibiting Dean Buchanan's Windfall Light collection till 29th February 2019. Deans work features striking colours, that has to be seen in person to be truly appreciated, so please come down to the art gallery and view these amazing works.

We are also excited that Dean will be at the gallery on the 31st January at 11am and 22nd February 1pm to give a talk about his work and some further insight into his work. Make sure you don't miss this awesome chance to meet him!

We sincerely hope you will be able to join us for this special occasion. Please RSVP to fgyakl@fgs.org.nz or register online.

About the Exhibition - Windfall Light
These recent paintings are a direct result of my bicycle journeys from Karekare through the Waitakere Ranges. On my early morning cycle rides when the sun breaks through the clouds after a rainfall the rising vapors create billowing ethereal shapes and sparkling prisms of light.

When I finally arrive home on a sunshine day I'm greeted by a vast expanse of mirrored ocean, shadows of clouds accompanied by slanting rays of light. The endless skies and plays of light offer endless inspiration.
