Costa Simpson is a young conductor who returns to Nelson to conduct Chroma Chamber Choir. He is currently undertaking postgraduate study at the University of Auckland under the tutelage of internationally recognised choral conductor and pedagogue of conducting, Dr Karen Grylls ONZM.

The programme features a cappella choral music based on the different times of day, from morning through night, spanning composers as diverse as the sixteenth-century Englishman Thomas Tallis to contemporary composers Ola Gjeilo, from Norway, and the popular Eric Whitacre.

“I’m particularly interested in the contrasting psychological and emotional effects the different times of day can have on us, and how that might have changed throughout time. In the past, the night was a time of darkness and the unknown, but now, our nights are often filled with brightness from the modern world. Nevertheless, the close of day and the slow change of light is a constant reminder of our life’s journey. In fact, our lives themselves could be seen this way: the bright morning of youth gives way to the warm afternoon sun, which in turn fades into cool night.”

Choral music’s unique power to heal and comfort is well established, and we hope that this uplifting and reflective programme will be a tonic for nerves frayed by the trials and stresses of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The choir is fortunate to have amongst its ranks the acclaimed pianist Richard Mapp, who will contribute two pieces for keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach, played on the NCMA's Steinway piano.
