Jonathan Tanner and Anna Maksymova In Concert

Oozing talent, two exceptional Canterbury musicians are coming to play in Rangiora!
Jonathan Tanner, violinist extraordinaire, and our well known and loved Anna Maksymova on piano.
Dynamic musicianship from this pair will both excite and entertain you.

Jonathan Tanner is a versatile violinist, violist and teacher based in Christchurch. Becoming a professional musician was never the plan, but after graduating from Burnside High School he enrolled at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington with the intention of becoming a high school music teacher. Very quickly he discovered the possibilities of a performing career through playing professionally with Orchestra Wellington and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
He completed his Bachelor degree and Post-graduate Diploma in Wellington, during which time he was appointed as concertmaster of the National Youth Orchestra and accepted into the World Youth Orchestra in Italy. Chamber music involvement saw his string quartets perform concerts for Chamber Music New Zealand and the Adam International Chamber Music Festival.
In 2013, Jonathan moved to Switzerland to continue his studies. He received his Master degree from Bern University of the Arts in 2015, where he was awarded the top mark for his final recital.

Jonathan’s past teachers include Stephen Larsen, Helene Pohl, Vesa-Matti Leppänen and Monika Urbaniak. He has also participated in masterclasses with Yair Kless, Feng Ning, Benjamin Schmid and Shmuel Ashkenasi and has enjoyed extensive chamber music coaching with artists such as the Tokyo, Takács, Penderecki and New Zealand String Quartets.

Since returning to New Zealand, Jonathan has discovered a real love of teaching. He has also worked with many of the country’s professional orchestras and performs regularly with the Christchurch and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras.

Born into a musical household, pianist Anna Maksymova began her formal musical education at the age of six at the Donetsk Music School for gifted children in Ukraine. In New Zealand she learned from Peter Nagy, Judith Clark and Dr Gao Ping. Anna has completed Bachelor of Music with First-Class Honours with Professor Michael Endres at the University of Canterbury. She has recently come back from Germany, where she finished Master of Music in Piano Performance in the Frankfurt Hochschule fur Musik, studying with renowned Russian pianist and teacher Lev Natochenny, himself a disciple of Lev Oborin. Further musical influences include masterclasses with Pascal Roge, Thomas Hecht, John Perry and Felix Gottlieb among others.

Anna was a regular soloist in the “Outstanding Young Musicians in Concert” series in Christchurch Music Centre. She is the winner of the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust Emerging Artist Series and is the 3rd prize winner at Kerikeri International Piano Competition in New Zealand. Anna is the recipient of the George Russell Music Scholarship, Ruby Hay Scholarship, Pettman Special Programme Scholarship, Leslie Atkinson Memorial Prize in Music and the Dame Malvina Major Foundation scholarship.

Currently Anna is living and working in Christchurch as a performing pianist and a teacher at her studio at The Piano, the new music centre of Christchurch. Since 2016 she has been involved as a soloist with the CSO, Akaroa Summer School, Dame Malvina Major Foundation and Concert for Christchurch Foundation Trust. She also has been collaborating with the Très Cordes trio since 2017. Her chamber music partners include some well known local musicians like Mark Walton, Jonathan Tanner, Tomas Hurnik, Anna Hoetjes, Oliver Sewell and Selena Orwin among other.
