McCahon House Trust

Colin McCahon is described as New Zealand’s most significant modern painter. In the 1950’s he lived with his family in a tiny cottage, nestled deep in the coastal foothills of the Waitākere Ranges in Titirangi, about 45 minutes west of Auckland City Central. Now a house museum, with a residency studio in the adjacent woodland, McCahon House stands now—as it did for McCahon— as a place where art, society and the natural environment converge. The house retains the hand-tooled additions and innovations made by McCahon himself. As a vibrant example of New Zealand vernacular architecture (a bach), it’s a natural extension of his paintings.

During the Auckland Writers & Readers Festival, McCahon House offers a curated exploration of Colin McCahon’s Auckland which is a narrated coach trip from central Auckland to McCahon House, a guided walk around the French Bay neighbourhood, where McCahon walked and painted, with guided tours of the house museum. The duration of the walk/tour is approximately 1.5 hours.

There are 3 bus trips each day:
1. Depart from Auckland Art Gallery at 9:00 am and return trip leaving McCahon House at 11:15 am
2. Depart from Auckland Art Gallery at 12:15 pm and return trip leaving McCahon House at 2:30 pm
3. Depart from Auckland Art Gallery at 3:30 pm and return trip leaving McCahon House at 5:45 pm
