A cutting-edge approach to photography will be on show in the Carr Family Gallery this spring through Dr Mizuho Nishioka’s solo exhibition, North by Northwest, her first exhibition in Canterbury.

Nishioka is recognised for her innovative and contemporary approach to photography. Her work centres on the technological production of the photographic image, and how amendment, alteration or disruption of photographic procedures can take the work into new visual territories.

North by Northwest brings together bodies of work which extend the possibilities of the photographic medium and dazzle viewers with their complex and arresting imagery. North by Northwest will include a number of photographic works with images captured by the artist during a field trip to mid-Canterbury over the 2020 summer period.

In 2016, Nishioka became the first artist in New Zealand to complete a PhD in photography at Massey University, Wellington. She was also the first person in Fine Arts to a receive the Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral scholarship. Nishioka has exhibited throughout NZ and currently works at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington as a Lecturer in Photography.

Nishioka will present an artist talk, as a special guest of the Ashburton Art Gallery’s Annual General Meeting on September 17 September, from 5:30pm. Here, Nishioka will discuss her creative and technical processes and her exhibition North by Northwest. This event will be followed by light refreshments. All are welcome to join us for this event.
