Gothicized Italic is a very attractive script which has many uses. It can be used for quotes, poems headings, names, added to artwork and the capitals lend themselves to embellishment. The Italicized Gothic, also known as Johnston’s Compressed Hand, delivers the rich, dense texture of formal Blackletter styles, but in a lively, more contemporary manner.
Italicized Gothic hand, with its extensive decorative possibilities, has a truly gothic flavour and is very different from the Italic writing of the classical Renaissance of fifteenth-century Italy.
In this one-day workshop you will learn good construction of the Italicized Gothic lower case and capital letters, words and numerals using a 3.8mm Parallel Pen, the ideal pen to use as the ink flows from the nib without having to worry about using dip pens and ink. In your own time you can graduate to using other size Parallel Pens or dip pens. With the basic knowledge of this versatile script it is important to follow up with practise, to write with style and confidence.
Students will receive individual time throughout the course of the day and given ideas on how to use the Italicized Gothic script. The narrow, Gothicized Italic script looks its best when densely packed, like it’s traditional Blackletter Gothic parent. This workshop is best suited for students who have taken the Foundational or Gothic workshops, or who have some similar previous beginner experience.
Students will receive comprehensive handouts, guide sheets plus pen, ink, A4 layout pad, and supplies. Class fee is $120, payable on sign-up. ($100 if you provide all your own materials). Students should bring their own lunch. Coffee and tea will be provided.
