Pure and Deep by Toa Fraser

In the late 90’s Toa Fraser's ‘Bare’ became an instant smash hit. The show meets and explores multiple different characters from different walks of life and the play is set right here in urban Aotearoa and the roles are all portrayed by two talented actors. The sequel ‘Pure and Deep’ came out a decade after ‘Bare’ and we are excited to bring this new work to audiences in Te Papaioea. Featuring the same two key characters of Dave and Venus, who are more cautious and vulnerable than ever and are yearning to uncover what it means to be alive. Pure and Deep is a comedic review of a country that often struggles to articulate a connection and communicate on a deeper truthful level. The show explores what it means to age in a world that is being destroyed by a materialistic consumer driven culture. It questions climate change and how our ‘pure green NZ’ is ceasing to exist. It is illuminating, confronting, honest and upfront. Multiple characters are explored through the medium of monologues and are all portrayed by only two actors, from the Russian wife living her best life in Piha to a Hollywood hot-shot, to the kid from ‘Boy’ – get ready for a riotous evening of laughter, fun and story-telling that makes you stop and think.
