A Level One, one-day workshop which takes participants through the tikanga and practice of identifying, collecting, gathering and using Native plants for medicinal use.

This workshop is a full immersive journey which takes place in the Okuti Valley and Manaia Reserve surrounds, in Little River, Banks Pennisula, Ōtautahi/Christchurch.

Participants will be taken on a journey through the ngahere/bush and learn to identify plants used in Rongoā Māori practice.

Kai Rongoā, Chelita Zainey, will engage participants in learning and growing their knowledge around the pono or right way to cultivate, collect, gather and protect the rakau used in Rongoā Māori.

Programme:

8.45am - Meet at Okuti Valley Old School Hall
9am - Mihi Whakatau - Whakawhanaungatanga
10am - Rongoā Hikoi Part One Manaia Reserve
12pm - Kai/Lunch Little River Campground
1pm - Rongoā Hikoi Part Two
3pm - Return to School Hall
3.30pm - Elementals and Rongoā Māori
4pm - Rongoā Māori in practice
5pm - Kamutu/Finish

Tauira will receive:
- An immersive ngahere/bush experience learning about Rongoā Māori (4 hours)
- A complete and safe understanding of the tikanga and kawa surrounding Rongoā and how to cultivate, collect, gather and protect rakau
- A comprehensive introduction into plant identification and uses
- A comprehensive Rongoā Māori workbook
- Ceremonial activations and insights
- Rongoā Māori sampling throughout the day

Tamariki and pepe are welcome but we ask that you ensure responsibility for them at all times throughout the wananga.

Please note participants are required to have a reasonable level of fitness (as long as you can climb up a hill or 2) to attend.

Please bring your own picnic lunch as we will be having kai at the campground immersed in the ngahere.
We will provide some healthy kai for afternoon tea but we also ask tauira to bring a plate for a shared afternoon tea.
