Ludwig van Beethoven was baptised on 17th December 1770, in Bonn Germany. Born the day before, he shares 16th December with the birth of Canterbury. Cantabrian pianist, Jeremy Woodside, joins neo-Cantabrian violinist, Jonathan Tanner, in a programme of Beethoven violin sonatas (no. 5 in F major 'The Spring' and no. 8 in G major) to celebrate both the 170th anniversary of Canterbury's birth and the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth and baptism.
This concert is dedicated to the ship, the 'Sir George Seymour', which arrived at Lyttelton on the morning of 17th December 1850, the third of the Canterbury Association's 'First Four Ships'. On board the 'Sir George Seymour' was William Guise Brittan, the first person to buy land in Canterbury (in London, in January 1850). Brittan took up Canterbury Run no 4 of 15,000 acres of leasehold land immediately adjacent to Christchurch and named it 'Lansdown-Halswell', after Lansdown in Bath and Edmund Halswell (and the eponymous river which ran through Brittan's estate).
A later owner of 'Lansdown' added an 'e' to the word and, since then, 'Lansdowne' has become the excepted spelling. What remains today of the epicentre of the 'Lansdown-Halswell' estate includes Lansdowne Homestead & Gardens, its former gatehouse (now the recently reopened Bicycle Thief Restaurant) and the Vineyard at Rossendale.
