For their first concert of the 2021 season, the Scholars Baroque at long last tackle the choral music of the undisputed giant of the German Baroque – J.S. Bach. As an introductory concert to Bach’s music, the Scholars present his greatest and perhaps most challenging choral works, the German Motets. Testing the stamina and concentration of any professional chamber choir, the motets demonstrate not only Bach’s absolute command and control of harmony but also the unique beauty and glory of his choral sound.

Motet: Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden, BWV 230
Motet: Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren, BWV 231

This programme is complemented by two of Handel’s Chandos Anthems. These anthems were written at a unique period in Handel’s life, shortly after he arrived in London. Handel became was the composer-in-residence at Cannons, the court of James Brydges, who became the First Duke of Chandos in 1719. The texts for the anthems come from the psalms. They were written for the Duke’s private chapel choir, so they are intimate in nature yet still display Handel’s unmistakable skill and sound which would later reach their zenith in his great oratorios such as Messiah. They follow the same structure as his oratorios, spacing the choruses out between beautiful yet demanding solo passages.

Chandos Anthem: Anthem #8 – O Come, Let Us Sing Unto the Lord
Chandos Anthem: Anthem #9 – O Praise the Lord with One Consent
