City Rail Link

City Rail Link (CRL) presents "Boreholes: a Window Into the Secrets of Auckland's Past" as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival 2021.

Join us as we share insights into Auckland’s unique topography gleaned from 150 core samples taken as part of CRL preparations. As well as telling the story of 20 million years’ worth of Tāmaki Makaurau’s rich heritage – including volcanic eruptions, marine deposits and human occupation - these samples tell us how we can plan for our city’s future.

Without them, we’d have little understanding of what conditions our tunnel boring machine would encounter underground while constructing New Zealand's first underground railway, the CRL.

Attendees of this educational and interactive event will discover what boreholes are, why they are needed, and what we discovered about Auckland’s past as part of the process.

Please note that this event is subject to COVID-19 lockdown conditions and will only go ahead at Alert Level 1 or Level 2.
