A long steep climb with some scrambling sections and one tricky rocky “step”. Good balance and sure footedness is required! Subalpine scrub and tussock, and views of both Poverty Bay and Bay of Plenty if the weather is fine. Weather dependent.

A back-up plan if the weather is not suitable could be to walk to Koranga Forks Hut (there and back). Koranga Forks Hut is situated in a clearing at the junction of the Koranga River and Kahunui Stream. These join to form the Waioeka River. The walk from the end of Moanui Road is an easy track through bush and some open farmland following the Koranga River, often close to the river but also climbing over bluffs in places. It is about 3½ hours each way.
