Heritage Talks: Heritage Buildings in the Sub-Antarctic

There are challenges encountered while working on maintaining these old structures. Especially in dealing with the harsh salty environment and the encounters from local wildlife – self-preservation becomes especially important when confronted by a 400 kg adolescent male Sea Lion, hidden in the undergrowth.

Our speaker, from Paul Cummack Conservation Ltd, has surveyed the old buildings on the sub-Antarctica Campbell Island. First sealing, later during World War 2 a sparce coast-watching service. The last major use, a meteorological station. These buildings are now in-frequently used – the weather station was automated, and ecological accommodation is now encouraged on board the visiting ships. Now Campbell Island is an environmental & ecological success story.
