Flamenco NZ presents La Guitarra, an evening of live Flamenco Music, Dance, Song and Poetry ... entertaining, celebratory, passionate and profound. Inspired by Lorca’s poem The Guitar, from the Poetry Collection Romancero Gitano (The Gypsy Ballads), the show is homage to Federico García Lorca, one of Spain's greatest poets and playwrights of the 20th century.

Created by Flamenco NZ's Maria Elena, the show La Guitarra builds on The Lament of the Guitar performance, which sold out in October, 2020.

It is very much a celebration of Lorca’s rich poetry, which is true art: full of symbolism and open for interpretation. The folklore and gypsy culture of Lorca’s native Andalusia provided much of his inspiration and subject matter, as did love, mortality, flamenco and bullfighting. Most of the poetry is in Spanish with some translation

Federico Garcia Lorca (1998- 1936), born in the province of Granada, Spain, was a member of “Generation of ’27”, a group of avant-garde artists that included Salvador Dali and Luis Buñuel. His legacy includes numerous plays, drawings and nine poetry bundles. Lorca had a strong connection to Flamenco and Gypsy people. A champion of the marginalised and forgotten, Lorca was tragically murdered at the start of the Spanish Civil War by Nationalist Guards. His poetry is immortal.

Local performers include Maria Elena (Guitar & Song – The Netherlands), Alexandra Laubli (Violin- Switzerland), Oden Pemberton (Guitar - Australia), Krasna Martinic Ristori (Dance & Song - Chile), Daniel Fernandez (Poetry Recital - Spain) and guests.
