Herald the Māori new year alongside iwi manaaki, Ngāti Whatūa Ōrākei, at Takaparawhau / Bastion Point – a place of special significance to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and the history of Tāmaki Makaurau. Tama nui te rā (the sun) will rise across the Waitematā and bring forth the dawn light on Takaparawhau.
Karakia (ritual incantations) and karanga (ceremonial calls) will sound across the whenua (land). Please join us to commemorate those who have passed, acknowledge those who remain, plan for the approaching seasons and welcome the new year with karanga, karakia, waiata and kotahitanga (unity).
Following the blessing, led by host iwi Ngāti Whatūa Ōrākei, there will be a light breakfast, entertainment and the opportunity to learn more about the history and stories of the host iwi. Dress warmly.
