Karanga Ink is hosting a market to celebrate Matariki 2021.

Matariki Mākete will be held during Matariki Festival 2021 and the K’Road Street Party celebrations - Te Karanga ā Hape, featuring a variety of stallholders displaying their art, crafts, clothing, kai and taonga for sale.

We’ll also be activating an Art Installation - Te Ara Whai Māramatanga, indigenizing the Cross Street Arcade to celebrate and acknowledge Matariki.
The Art Installation will be a visual representation of the nine stars of Matariki and an opportunity to educate the wider community about Matariki as they enter and exit the arcade, ending on Sunday 11th July.

Karanga Ink would like to acknowledge the support of our sponsors KBA, Te Puni Kōkiri and Newton Cutting Forme Services for their help in making this event possible.

To celebrate Matariki and the fresh new look of Karangahape Road, Karangahape Road Business Association (KBA) invites everyone to attend Te Karanga ā Hape – a progressive street party with music, art, performance, fashion, workshops, activations, installations, food and fantastic entertainment!

Through the theme of Te Ao Mārama / The Enlightened World, they will acknowledge the Matariki star cluster, as well as the 1930s community project that first lit the strip with electric lighting, and the colourful and inclusive vibrancy of the Karangahape Road we love today.

Te Karanga ā Hape calls people to experience the bountiful sights, sounds, tastes and feelings that are unique to K’ Road. From 3pm, the street will light up with live music across multiple stages, outdoor screenings and indoor exhibitions, Matariki markets, free kai and fusion boil-ups, fashion installations in shop windows, fresh street art on Poynton Terrace, free workshops and walking tours, bicycle valets and guided rides, plus a smorgasbord of special offers from local shops and restaurants. With sunset scheduled for 5.15pm, the celebrations will be lit well into the evening!

There's also a Matariki hub, with a kaupapa inviting creatives into an interactive space to share their skills, set up at 211 Karangahape Road opposite the Cross Street Arcade. From Thursday 24 June to Saturday 10 July, this public space will host a photographic exhibition alongside a series of wānanga and creative workshops.

Follow the lights or chase the whai along the length of Karangahape Road, around the top of Pitt Street and over the ridge to Cross Street. Printed programmes will be available on the day.

Should it be necessary to postpone Te Karanga ā Hape due to COVID-19, the event will be rescheduled to 24 July.
