Our Shearing Competition has been held on the first Saturday (but Sunday this year) in February since 1963, i.e 58 years and counting. We bring a stage into the Memorial Hall in Marton with 6 stands and spectators get to watch local talent and world famous competitors shear more than 1100 sheep over the course of a day.

We have as many as 120 shearers and 55 woolhandlers showcasing the energy, skill and talent of sheep shearing in five grades - novice, junior, intermediate, senior and open. We host the Lamb Shear component of National All Breeds Circuit and Manawatu Knitting Mills (MKM) Mini Circuit for lower grade competitors and North Island vs South Island event.

Our total prize money is over $10,000, going to 12th place for all grades except novice. We are a non-profit community event, for young and old, bringing the town and country together to enjoy each other's company and a great shearing spectacle.
