War, passive resistance and the children who will never forget.
Wellington Museum presents Tātarakihi: The Children of Parihaka, a 2012 documentary film by Paora Te Oti Takarangi Joseph.
In 1881 the children of Parihaka greeted the government invaders with white feathers of peace. Tātarakihi tells the story of a ‘journey of memory’ taken by a group of Parihaka children who travel to the South Island 130 years later.
They follow in the footsteps of their ancestors who were transported south after the 1860s Taranaki land confiscations. Narrated by the children, the film combines footage of their hikoi with vivid archival photography.
Kura Moeahu from Parihaka will be giving a mihi before the screening starts.
Screening in Wellington Museum’s Te Wheke space on the ground floor, no booking required.
In English and Te reo Māori with English subtitles. Runtime: 65 minutes
