Te Manawa Museum

How will we continue feeding ourselves as the planet warms and extreme weather events batter the landscape more often? How will some of Earth’s most iconic animals survive?

Te Manawa is hosting a special Discovery Time session on International Youth Day (12 August) from 3-6pm, where you can try to answer these questions by taking part in a simulation: as the Polar Bear’s habitat changes, what must it do to stay fed? The ice is melting, food is scarcer, and the bear grows hungrier. Can you save it?

This year’s International Youth Day is about the transformation of food systems, and the role rangatahi have to play in keeping the planet healthy. As you play the game to save the Polar Bear, think too about the changes humans might need to make to keep everyone fed. Keep in mind that addressing this issue, without also considering others like poverty reduction, social inclusion, health care, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation, will be very difficult.

Everyone – other museum visitors included – will have a space to record their thoughts about this theme.
