Tanea Heke (Director of Toi Whaakari) joins Nina Nawalowalo (Director of Pasifika theatre company The Conch), at Wellington Museum to kōrero about the inspiring mahi of Māori and Pasifika performing arts in the capital city.

About Tanea Heke:

Tanea Heke (Ngā Puhi Nui Tonu, Ngāti Rangi, Te Uri Taniwha, Ngāti Hineira) was brought up in Wellington and graduated from Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School in 1997. She went onto carve a career in the arts sector spanning Taki Rua Productions, Te Papa Tongarewa and Creative New Zealand. With numerous films to her credit, Tanea is currently the Director of Toi Whakaari and runs Hāpai Productions which she began with her dear friend, the late Nancy Brunning.

About Nina Nawalowalo:

In a career spanning more than 35 years, internationally acclaimed theatre director Nina Nawalowalo created a platform for telling Pacific stories across the globe. Passionately committed to bringing untold stories into the light, she practices theatre to affect social change. In 2013 she established the Solomon Islands National Women’s Theatre Company as a means to address violence against women and girls. Acclaimed works include ‘The White Guitar’ and ‘A Boy Called Piano’.
