This illustrated presentation will examine some of the challenges and successes in presenting the exhibition project Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art curated by Nigel Borell. Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art was the largest exhibition in the 133-year history of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki (AAG) featuring over 300 artworks by 110 Māori artists. During this presentation he will discuss the ambitions for the project and reflect upon the regional and national benefits that the project has received to date. This talk will consider how large-scale exhibition making could be the catalyst for broader conversations about identity and place.

Nigel Borell is an Artist in Residence at Arts in Oxford from 24 June - 15 August 2021, which encompasses the time of Matariki. During his residency he will experiment and evolve a new body of work exploring creation narratives in the main gallery over 4 weeks, Haumanu Hauora which is an expression that speaks to health and wellbeing.

This event is part of our Matariki 2021 programme, celebrating the Māori new year with ahunga nui (connection) through ngā toi (the arts).
