Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5
Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade
We finish our Auckland Immerse 2022 weekend with a concert of grandiose proportions.
Out of the destruction and debris of war rose Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, betraying nothing of the turmoil he was surrounded by when he was writing it. While he likely wouldn’t have approved of the Emperor title, it’s actually a very appropriate name for the piece itself, reflecting the nobility, dignity, poise, regality and mana of the work.
Rimsky Korsakov’s Scheherazade sketches out a great love story: the framing narrative of the Arabian Nights, in which the clever Scheherazade bewitches her Sultan husband with spellbinding tall tales of sailors, genies and adventure. Rimsky-Korsakov’s work will bewitch you too, with its portrait of the dazzling world of Middle Eastern folklore.
English pianist Paul Lewis concludes his Beethoven piano cycle with the magnificent Piano Concerto No.5, 'Emperor'. The other two concerts are: Orpheus on 12 Aug and Reverence on 13 Aug.
