Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis (Mass for Troubled Times), also known as the “Nelson Mass” is one of the six great Mass settings that form the crowning glory of his vocal music, along with The Creation and The Seasons.
The Nelson Mass was written in 1798, at a time when Haydn’s employer Nicolaus II had recently dismissed his wind band, forcing Haydn to compose this mass for only strings with the addition of trumpets (possibly hired for the occasion), timpani and organ. Later scores added woodwinds, which mostly double or replace the organ part. Camerata and The Tudor Consort will perform Haydn's original and rather special version, amidst what are indeed some troubled times.
Check the Camerata or Tudor Consort’s websites or Facebook pages for postponements or cancellations. Koha will be accepted by EFTPOS or electronic bank transfer (no cash accepted), details upon entry. No pre-registration. Entry from 7pm. This concert will be recorded by RNZ Concert.
