In a special treat for festival goers, Catherine Chidgey will play a double-header in Queenstown this year. First she will talk about her new novel, The Axeman's Carnival, with Queenstown journalist Debbie Jamieson. Then she will celebrate with the audience the official launch of the book, with drinks and canapés and a chance to chat with the author.

Set in the black blocks of Central Otago, The Axeman's Carnival tells the story of a struggling couple's farming life through the eyes of a rescued magpie who becomes a social media sensation. It is funny, sad, insightful and 'flat-out brilliant', according to Elizabeth Knox.

A little over two decades ago Catherine set the publishing world alight with her first novel, In a fishbone church. She has won many major awards in New Zealand and overseas. Her recent novel Remote Sympathy was shortlisted for the Dublin Literary Award and the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards 2021.

Catherine was a huge hit when she appeared via Zoom last year so we are delighted to be hosting her IRL in November.

Book launch supported by Te Herenga Waka University Press and Two Paddocks.
