Summit Marlborough Heritage Festival: Fashion, Celebrations & Traditions: 1870 - 1970 with Textile Curator Pam Saunders

Join us for the opening of Fashion, Celebrations & Traditions: 1870 - 1970. This new Marlborough Museum Textiles Exhibition includes a wedding dress from c.1875, a uniform worn to the Coronation of George VI in 1937, (following the abdication of Edward VIII), as well as Maori Textiles made by Dolly Neame, and a quintessential mini dress c.1970.

Women's fashion in the 1870s emphasises the back of the skirt when long trains and fabric were draped up into bustles, low square necklines were fashionable. By the end of the 1960s incomes for young people were at the highest since the end of WWII, and they wanted that do more than copies of the designs worn by their parents. Designers specifically targeted young people and the mini skirt was the most distinctive innovation.

Bookings Essential. RSVP by phone 03 578 1712 or email info@marlboroughmuseum.org.nz.
