A walk to the impressive Ngatapa mountain and pa site where in 1868/69 Te Kooti's people were attacked by the forces of the Armed Constabulary, Ngati Porou, Arawa and Kahungunu, in one of the most significant battles of the New Zealand Wars. Access through 'Hillview' off Makaretu Rd, about 4 hours walking, including a steady climb to the top.
