Riccarton Players Inc, is pleased to announce the return of the musical genre to the stage for its final production of 2022.

Godspell, the musical with universal appeal is based on the book by John-Michael Tebelak, which tells the gospel of St Matthew by a small group of people that help Jesus Christ teach different parables through a playful and poetic variety of games, storytelling techniques and a large dose of comic timing.

It was originally workshopped using the ideas of the author and cast and these have been shaped into what is now an exciting and entertaining show which has lost none of its appeal – 50 years on by creating a musical that would help people cope with stressful times not unlike what our communities are experiencing right now.

An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, will accompany this experienced and talented cast with plenty of energy and vocal strength as they chronicle Jesus' life utilising simple staging, colourful costumes and the use of comedy, song and dance.

Under the guidance of our team, Godspell is lifted out of its specific origins in the 1970s to focus on the timeless value of community building. It retains its revolutionary, transitional feeling of its original time-period, which loses nothing of its appeal even for today’s changing world as the cast enacts a world that will speak to today’s audiences, transcending religious denominations, to engage in the ways in which stories have the power to uplift and inspire all walks of life.

We look forward to seeing you at this uplifting musical experience.
