BRING YOUR WRITING - poems, flash fiction, short story, novel excerpts, performance poetry etc - to share, or come as audience to hear what's brand new.

MUSICIAN GUEST: BRAVE CAITLIN SMITH'S IMAGINARY BAND

Brave Caitlin Smith’s Imaginary Band are Caitlin Smith (piano and vocals) and the inspiration of anyone in the ether the listener wishes to conjure up as accompaniment. After all, Mike Alexander has said Smith has “a voice that imagination created”.

Smith's latest album You Have Reached Your Destination creates a multisensory universe unto itself: Braille and a tactile labyrinth within the cover art, poetry and footsteps recorded between 14 originals. A mesmerizing, prolific and passionate performer, originals are sandwiched between the tastiest overs, especially the repertoire of her spiritual parents Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.

Other iterations are: The Caitlin Smith Trio (or quartet) have held down well-loved residencies in Auckland for over two decade, The Caitlin Smith Group (having released an album of originals ‘Aurere’ in 2004), The Fondue Set (who’ve released three albums worth of twisted and wild covers), Collaborations with the Auckland Jazz Orchestra including 2021’s album East of the Sun.

As a vocal coach, she anticipates the release of 65 columns written for NZ Musician Magazine as an audiobook. Also, within the audible universe, a Substack subscription of her poetry will be made available in sonic form.

Since You Have Reached Your Destination was recorded, Smith has written a further 20 songs that will be released as albums, as the fates allow.
