Eventfinda Description

Shake, shimmy and groove
to the soulful rhythms of Africa!

Release tension from your week
and share in some epic joy.

Let your spirit soar dancing to uplifting live drumming rhythms.

Monday is Beginners Class
Thursday is Community Class

Why not do both?

All are welcome to both classes, no experience is required. Come dance with us and get inspired.

About the Class:

You will be guided through a warm up, learn some traditional West African and/or creative Afro-inspired choreography, and put it to music for an interactive high energy experience, followed by a relaxing stretch, so you leave feeling great.

Student Testimonials:

“Dancing with you each week is a ray of sunshine, a breath of fresh invigorating air which refills my energy level and clears clouds off my mind.”

“These classes are amazing, taught by my friend Jenny Bloomfield, she is such a joyous teacher and it is incredibly special that you can dance with live drumming - lucky to have such a community in Welly. If you’ve never danced with real people drumming real drums you should try it!”

“Jenny’s classes and choreography have been fun and conscientious of my injuries, it has connected me back to expressing myself physically and spiritually, which I didn’t think I would be able to do again in my life. Another important aspect of Moringa Dancers is the connection to African culture. I’m learning so much through Jenny’s knowledgeable and respectful approach.”

“Being a part of Moringa Dancers is a huge part of my life, the shared love of dance and drumming and beautiful energies with amazing people.”

“It is an incredibly important part of my life. It is such a beautiful creative thing, but also the the people within the group are so special. It is a crucial part of my physical and emotional well-being.”

“One day I found myself surrounded by wonderful musicians and dancers and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. It is like finding your place, where you want to be, where I do what I love and perceive the happiness and vibrant energy of everyone around. It is creating a magic, splendorous moment just for being together!“

About the Tutor:

Jenny Bloomfield has a passion for empowering people to find freedom and joy through movement. Her teaching emphasises sustainable body movement and listening to your body to find your own natural flow.

She has travelled twice to Ghana to deepen into the culture and rhythms with indigenous teachers and guides.

She shares her knowledge with the utmost respect and gratitude to the many master teachers she has had the honour to learn from, hailing from Ghana, Guinea, Gambia, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Mali and Liberia, the living and ancient cultures and ethnic groups these art forms originate from and belong to.

Originally from California, Jenny has been studying dances of West Africa & diaspora for 20+ years, and teaching community dance since 2005. She founded Moringa Dancers in 2012. She holds a BA in Cultural Anthropology (UCSC), a P-BACC in Creative Writing (SAIC), a Diploma in Dance Movement Therapy (DTNZ), a 350 hr Dru Yoga Teaching qualification, and a Bana Kuma Dance Teaching Certificate.

About the Drummers:

Monday night drumming is with Simon Elwell (Djembe.nz) and Susanna Hay on alternate weeks. Thursday night drumming is always led by Simon and features Kubatana (Kubatana.nz).
