Join us on Sunday 5 June 2022 at 2pm in the hall behind Brain Watkins House Museum for our next Tauranga Historical Society Talk. Tauranga collector Brian Ducker will talk about the 64 post offices of the Tauranga Postal District and show us his many postal treasures. His covers include the period when Imperial troops were in Tauranga under General Cameron prior to the Battle of Gate Pā | Pukehinahina. An 1864 cover has a stamp cancelled with the postal marking “HQ”, or headquarters (a cancellation is a mark applied to a stamp or postal stationery to prevent it being re-used). This cancellation was used exclusively by General Cameron’s headquarters. Brian’s cancelled stamps include several marked “Muirs Reefs”, the tiny gold mining settlement that briefly flourished in the Papamoa Hills near Te Puke.
THS Talks are open to all. The $2 door charge includes afternoon tea and a chance to network with others that share your passion for history.
