This Category 2 listed square villa was completed in 1881 by boat builder and civil contractor Capt. Joseph Denham Brain on Tauranga’s Te Papa Peninsula. Brain Watkins House Museum is rare in that it was occupied by the same family for 98 years. The contents have been left in situ and serve to chart developments in how people lived throughout almost a century of change.

Today, Brain Watkins House Museum is situated on the corner of Cameron Road and Elizabeth Street and is open to the public on Sunday afternoons for a $5 entrance free (children free). There is also a hall for hire behind the museum which helps pay for the maintenance and upkeep of the house and site.

You can support our work by joining the Society for just $40 per year.
