Join our current exhibiting artists Ashleigh Taupaki & Jasmine Tuiā for an extra-special painting workshop. During this workshop, the artists will share their drawing skills using bits of tapa and naturally sourced pigment. Participants will be asked to crush, mix, and paint using the rocks and clays. Each participant will be asked to think of a memory, paint it with the pigment on tapa, and name their creation using a single word. This naming process reflects on the difficulty of trivially naming objects that are considered taonga.

This workshop can only accommodate a limited amount of people, so please register with the gallery to ensure you get a spot! To register please email freshgalleryotara@aklc.govt.nz and or call 09 261 8030. Please provide your name, how many places you would like to reserve, a contact phone number, and an email address.

This workshop is held alongside the exhibition 'What is your VVAI?'

'VVAI' combines the Māori term for water (wai) with its Samoan equivalent (vai), and explores the lifecycles of Pacific cultural materials connected to place, space, and people. Focusing on Pacific knowledge, it aims to foster conversation within Pacific communities in Tāmaki Makaurau. This collaboration between Ashleigh Taupaki and Jasmine Tuiā stems from their 2021 NEO Digital Residency with the Übersee Museum in Bremen, Germany, where they investigated what it means to name Pacific cultural objects within a museum context.
