Year 12 Box Theatres Drama students present a thought-provoking comedy '2b or nt 2b' by Sarah Delahunty in the new school Black Box Theatre. By arrangement with Playmarket. Doors open 6.40pm.

Famous characters from equally famous plays are united by exploring the context of Hamlet's famous soliloquy. Sophocles' Antigone, Shakespeare's Hamlet and Helena (from A Midsummer Night's Dream), Chekhov's Masha (The Seagull) and Irena (The Three Sisters), and Ibsen's Hedda (Hedda Gabler) are all 17 year olds with little in common except the title question. Sitting alone in their rooms, sure they must have the most tragic life ever, they end up finding each other as teens do in an online chat room www.whatsthepoint.com. An agreement is made to meet on the “bridge to nowhere” at midnight. However, this meeting takes them down a different path than they had imagined. The significant catalyst for finding hope is that they are no longer alone even if they do compete for who has the most tragic life. The process by which they find ways to move on is funny but also illuminates the very real challenges we go through as humans in our journey to find acceptance and understanding.

Although the tongue-in-cheek script hopes to find light and laughs the content may be triggering therefore is recommended for 15 +. This work is for youth and we hope to see many of the student's peers walk through the door but equally, it is for all of our community Whānau to help build a bridge in the conversations we are having with our young people in these very unsettled times. We hope that this encourages more communication and speaking up when you need to. We also warmly invite the audience to a Q and A session immediately after the show to enable themes and ideas to be unpacked and further understood. Theatre in education has a duty to respond to the world around us and help students and their community acknowledge, process and begin to understand challenges to empower positive actions moving forward. We hope you can join us for this.
