Yokai Talk 6: Sophie Matthiesson - Hokusai and the Art of Edo Japan

Revisiting highlights of the recent exhibition Enchanted Worlds: Hokusai, Hiroshige and the Art of Edo Japan which was held at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki in 2020, this talk offers a broad introduction to the art of Edo period Japan (1603-1867).

It then discusses the flourishing of ‘Yokai’, the mysterious world of ghosts, monsters, apparitions, and supernatural beings during this period - at a time of scientific curiosity, social change and a sophisticated approach to leisure and play.

About the speaker:
Dr Sophie Matthiesson is senior curator of international art at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and a specialist in French Revolutionary art. After returning from a decade of study in the UK and France, Sophie was curator of international art at the National Gallery of Victoria from 2006 – 2019 where she co-produced major exhibitions on Napoleon, Degas, Van Gogh, Monet and many others. Her recent projects include Manpower: Myths of Masculinity and Heavenly Beings: Icons of the Christian Orthodox World.

In 2020 she was coordinating curator of the exhibition of painted scrolls and screens, Enchanted Worlds: Hokusai, Hiroshige and the Art of Edo Japan.
