The Argyle Trio is led by well-known violinist Wilma Smith, former Concertmaster of NZSO and Melbourne Symphony. This trio was formed a few years ago when Wilma, who loves discovering and nurturing young talent, found herself beguiled by the magic combination of cellist Matthias Balzat and pianist Lawrence Matheson. The Trio, whose last New Zealand visit was hampered by Covid border restrictions, are now at last embarking on a nationwide tour to perform a programme of trios by Beethoven and two Czech composers - Smetana and Dvořák.

Born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand, Wilma Smith is now based in Melbourne where she focuses on chamber music and guest performing with various orchestras. Artistic Director of the Martinborough Music Festival, she is also on the Board of the NZSO. One of Australia’s most exciting young pianists, Laurence Matheson is in demand as soloist and chamber musician. He studied at the Australian National Academy of Music as one of their youngest ever students and became a Fellow of the Academy in 2016. New Zealand cellist Matthias Balzat graduated from the University of Waikato at the age of seventeen and continues his studies at the Robert Schumann Hochschule für Musik in Düsseldorf. A seasoned performer, he performs throughout Europe, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.

Beethoven’s first piano trio is a strong confident work that the young composer wrote to introduce himself to his Viennese audience, obviously with great success. Bedrich Smetana’s music, on the other hand, has a tragic background – it was written in response to the death of his beloved young daughter who had succumbed to scarlet fever. It is heartfelt music, full of beautiful melodies and deep sadness. Smetana’s countryman Dvořák makes great use of Czech folk melodies, rhythms and traditions. One such tradition is the “Dumka”, in which a brooding melancholy alternates with interludes of lively dance-like exuberance. The Argyle Trio will be performing the famous “Dumky Trio” which is actually a series of six “Dumkas” - each filled with every possible extreme of Czech emotion and fire.

Because of repairs to the Waikanae Memorial Hall this concert will be held at the Kapiti Uniting Parish Church in Weka Road, Raumati. Because capacity is less than usual, door sales may be limited and concert-goers are advised to buy their tickets in advance. There will be sales as usual at Waikanae New World and Moby Dickens Books in Paraparaumu Beach. For ticket information visit www.waikanaemusic.org.nz or phone (022) 345 5316.
