'Divinations' is a significant body of new work by acclaimed New Zealand artist Christine Webster arising from her final collaboration with New Zealand cultural treasure, choreographer and dancer Douglas Wright before his death in 2018. Comprising 14 photographs and 4 videos, ‘Divinations’ is a poignant exhibition that holds in tension the body’s earthly flesh with lofty themes of religious ecstasy, transcendence and death alongside quotidian details of daily life. It is the first solo exhibition by Webster, now based in the UK, in Aotearoa New Zealand since her exhibition ‘Therapies’ at Gus Fisher Gallery in 2014.

Christine Webster made her mark in the vanguard of a new generation of artists who confronted the reigning regionalism of New Zealand art in the 1980s, with her prescient investigations of gender and sexuality and her active engagement in the international arena, first at Museum Ludwig, Cologne with ‘Neue Mythen’ (1989), then the international touring of her defining 'Black Carnival' (1993-1997). Webster’s challenging, sometimes transgressive, photographic and video works have continued to investigate identity, desire and mortality, largely through modes of performance or role play. Her practice has attracted a strong exhibition and collection history nationally and internationally.
