I adore the fact that people seem fascinated by soapmaking. I've done it for more than eight years and it’s one of those mad-science-ie things that appeal to the Kiwi ethos of self-reliance, there are a lot of great reasons to try making your own soap.
Health-aware folk may want better control over ingredients. Environmentally aware may want to reduce the size of their footprint by getting rid of those pesky single-use wrappers. It's also incredibly easy to make Vegan soap or to make it low-irritant. Glycerine forms naturally when soap is made but many manufacturers take it out and on-sell it, so natural, handmade soap leaves skin feeling much softer than what you buy- you will love it! in the second part I’ll tell you about clays, butters, and additives like Kawakawa that make bars simply amazing - Note: You will have the opportunity to choose to make one of theses special soaps with Kawakawa, Hempseed, Cocoa, or Shea butter in the second workshop.
Making your own soap is budget friendly because so many ingredients are already in the house, and it lasts on average 7 x longer than liquid soap. Don't forget it can be made pretty with color and fragrances, so it is a lovely gift.
As with any skill, it takes time and experience to become a master soap maker. Rome was not built in a day! However, with a good plan and some knowledge about how people learn best, I aim to set people up with a level of competence that gives them confidence to build on in their own time.
The focus of these workshops is 1. Give essential knowledge and then put what we learned to good use making a basic batch of soap. Then, 2. after participants have had time to practice at home. I will show them how the soap they make can be tailored to be exactly how they want it.
At the end of this training course, people will have made at least 2 batches of beautiful soap, the second of which is tailored to their needs.
Bring a small box or container to keep your batch of soap upright when you take it home.
I supply ingredients and so on, but participants must wear protective, flat-soled, closed shoes and old clothing that protects exposed areas like arms and legs from lye splashes. Also on the off-chance that the event is canceled or postponed, I will need your contact details so... please say hi using the email below
