One ancient Halloween tradition is Samhain. A festival of Celtic origin that marks the end of the harvest season and the coming of winter.
It is celebrated on October 31st or November 1st and is considered one of the four major Gaelic seasonal festivals.
Despite its Northern Hemisphere roots, Samhain is observed in New Zealand. However, some pagans celebrate at the end of April/start of May. This is because the Winter season begins at this time of year in New Zealand.
Modern Pagans and Wiccans celebrate Samhain as one of their most important festivals. It’s a time to honour and communicate with deceased loved ones and reflect on the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
This Celtic tradition has also been incorporated into some modern-day Halloween events – creating a fusion of cultural practices adds a uniquely Kiwi touch to Halloween festivities.
