Lisa DeVries is an award-winning local artist with an upcoming solo exhibition at the Nelson Suter Art Society's McKee Gallery. "The Floral Chair Project" is the culmination of 18 months of preparation and painting.

The project was born from Lisa painting her son in a floral chair in her home, which was accepted as a finalist at this year's Adams Portraiture Awards in Wellington. She became excited by the idea of doing a series of portraits in the chair - her neighbour came up with the idea to take the chair to other locations around Nelson and thus the Floral Chair Project was born. Lisa's best mate helped her carry the chair to iconic spots around Nelson where local people were invited to be part of the project by sitting in the chair and being photographed. Lisa then completed the paintings in her studio.

The project created quite a bit of interest, with the public wondering why two women were lugging a floral chair around the Cathedral steps, Queen's Gardens or Whakatu Marae. For the artist, the project highlights the Nelson Region, its people, and the contrast of private space with public space.

The exhibition runs from April 17th to May 7th 2023 at the McKee Gallery in The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatu.
