Lucas Kewell with guest musician Hanna-Wiskari-Griffiths (saxophone)

In 2022 Lucas was awarded a scholarship to the Berklee Music College Summer School and there he met Serkan Hakki (clarinet) from Syria. Since returning to New Zealand they have stayed in touch and for the past two months Lucas has been composing pieces to take to Istanbul for a recording session with Serkan Hakki and other musicians in April. The concert on the 10th March will include these new works accompanied by Swedish saxophone player, Hanna Wiskari, on some pieces. This is a chance to hear the works, for the first time, before Lucas flies out in early April.

Lucas started playing piano at the age of ten at Oratia Primary school with lessons once a week from Larissa Kuznetsova. Larissa recognised an inner talent and encouraged Lucas to improvise and explore the sounds of the piano.

It was three years later when a pupil at Avondale college that music teacher Mike Robinson discovered Lucas’s ability at the keyboard one morning when walking past the music room “I heard this music, it wasn’t classical, it wasn’t jazz but something quite new, I walked in to find a young boy playing the Steinway grand piano with such passion, he was Lucas“ Lucas and fellow pupils went on to form a jazz quartet (Toby and the Rest) in their last year at college, between them, they won nine National awards at the youth jazz competitions in Tauranga, Wellington and Auckland with Lucas winning the Bill Hoffmeister trophy for most outstanding pianist and another for most outstanding original composition, ‘Poor America’.

Lucas is basically self-taught and when asked where his music comes from, he replied “I don’t know, it just feels right”
