Join award-winning NZ landscape and astro-photographer Mike White on location to observe and photograph the Matariki star cluster as it rises in the pre-dawn sky.

Our workshop will begin on the shores of Te Waihora / Lake Ellesmere at the Lakeside Domain Reserve accessed at the end of Timber Yard Road, Leeston. Mike will be on hand to refresh participants' on night sky photographic techniques but it is highly recommended that you already be comfortable with the basics of operating your camera in manual mode. 1-1 tuition cannot be guaranteed as this is a large group workshop. Once we're all set-up and ready to go, we'll see the stars of Matariki rising above the north-eastern horizon, shortly followed by the thin sliver of a waning crescent Moon. Mike will also point out other well-known stars and constellations and provide guidance on capturing images of these celestial sights. The workshop will conclude at sunrise (approximately 8am).

Young photographers are welcome though anyone under the age of 16 will need to have an adult with them.

Main date: Friday 14 July 2023 (Matariki Public Holiday)
Back-up dates: Saturday 15 July or Sunday 16 July 2023
