Moment of Truth is a collection of new paintings and sculptural work by Chevron Hassett.

Hassett introduces paintings as part of his gallery practice for the first time. Incorporating customary whakairo (carving) and kowhaiwhai (painting) forms, he reconfigures the designs into poetic dialogue and visual language, speaking on important contemporary issues and highlighting experiences of Urban Maori communities today. He also presents new statues and a reimagination of his uniform works. Nurturing a continuous momentum in investigation and holistically maintaining conversations of Urban Indigeneity within is practice.

Chevron Hassett, born in Lower Hutt and now based in Auckland, Aotearoa is an artist of Ngati Porou, Ngati Rongomaiwahine and Pakeha heritage. He graduated with a Bachelor of Design with Honours from Massey University in 2016, received CNZ Nga Manu Pirere award in 2017 and was a recipient of The Arts Foundation Springboard award in 2022.

Hassett is predominantly working in lens-based media, sculpture, and public installation. Exhibiting both in Aotearoa and Australia, at the heart of his practice is the essential spirit of whanaungatanga. His recent works engage with narratives of socio-cultural identities, urban indigeneity, colonialism within Pacific and indigenous histories.

Recent solo exhibitions:
Artspace Sydney, Enjoy Gallery, Govett-Brewster, Artspace Aotearoa.

A huge thanks goes out to our sponsors, Wellington City Council, for making it possible to exhibit Chevron Hassett's work at Twentysix, and to Creative NZ for their contribution to the production of the artwork.
