This course is brought to you by the Textile Hub, an innovative educational business dedicated to empowering individuals and businesses through a curated selection of short courses.

This 2-day course provides Intermediate Level skills for textile design using Adobe Photoshop. It covers processes to create repeating patterns for fashion and textile applications. The design files created are prepared for digital printing.

Presenter
Angela Fraser graduated as a textile designer from Wellington Polytechnic. After working as a carpet and knit designer she moved into art education. She taught printed textiles at AUT from 1994-2014 and completed her MA Art + Design in 2004. Angela has delivered short courses since 2007 and now runs her own textile design consultancy specialising in digital print.

Bring your own laptop
The course is taught using Photoshop 2023. The notes are written for both PC and Mac. You will require your own laptop with the latest Photoshop software installed.

Participants must download a 7 day free trial of Photoshop unless they already have the latest version installed.

Content
This course introduces the processes and workflow for designing repeating patterns for digital printing. Repeating patterns allow a design to be filled across the width and length of fabric for continuous metreage. Digital printing enables designs to be developed from a range of sources including scanned drawings and photographs. You will be introduced to digitising artwork and optimising your imagery.

Three tutorials will cover techniques for creating a tile for a seamless repeat from an original artwork or photograph. Images are provided for the tutorials to give a consistent experience. They cover the use of Reflection, Layer Masks and the Offset Filter and Define Pattern to create a Pattern Fill Layer.

The course covers the use of Adjustment Layers, Blend Modes and Indexed Colour to change the appearance and reduce the number of colours. It introduces the Healing Tools to correct unwanted visual lines or details in your pattern. It also covers how to combine images using Layer Masks to remove the background for each design element and Solid Colour Layers for background colour.

In the second part of the course, you will create a repeating pattern using your own artwork and learn how to prepare files for printing. Participants will have the option to have their design/s printed onto fabric (additional charge applies).

There will also be an option to have some 1:1 tuition with Angela following the course (additional charge applies).

What to bring
Bring your own laptop (see above). Notes will be provided on a USB device that you can copy to your laptop. Images are provided for the tutorials but for the second part of the course you need to bring a selection of high-quality image files. They can be digital colour photographs or original artwork that has been digitised. If they are stored in the cloud, download them before the course and organise them into a folder.

There is an on-site cafe or you are welcome to bring your own lunch and refreshments.
