The Gisborne region’s temperate environment with kind spring rainfalls and long dry summers, combined with both alluvial and heavier clay soils, enables dry farming of a wide range of grape varieties, but perhaps most notably, Chardonnay, for which Gisborne has long been famous. For many years the region was known as “The Chardonnay Capital of New Zealand”.
We are therefore thrilled to announce the addition of a Chardonnay Masterclass to this year’s event series. The Masterclass will feature a selection of best Chardonnay by local winemakers to showcase the best Gisborne Chardonnay expressions.
Not only will those attending get to experience some truly delicious Chardonnay, you will also be hosted by Master of Wine Sophie Parker-Thomson at one of NZs oldest wineries, Matawhero.
Sophie is a wine producer and wine industry consultant based in Marlborough. Raised in the New Zealand wine regions of Gisborne and Central Otago, winemaking and hospitality were endemic to Sophie’s upbringing. A zealous advocate of the quality and sub-regional diversity of New Zealand and particularly Marlborough wines, Sophie has also been a New Zealand consultant to the World Atlas of Wine (8th ed.) and the Oxford Companion to Wine.
