The Time Travellers’ Ball is returning to the Anzac Hall for 2023! With the world slowly getting back to normal, we thought it high time that Wairarapa’s biggest and best costume ball should make a return. Starting at 7pm on June 17th, guests are invited to come in formal costumes that can be from any time period you choose (just not the boring old present!)
There will be a theme for this year’s Best Dressed competition; La Belle Époque. This French term translates to “The Beautiful Era” and lasted from about 1870 until the outbreak of the First World War. It was an era of great advancement, not just in science and culture, but also art and especially fashion. It gave rise to the Moulin Rouge, the Eiffel Tower, and one of the greatest World’s Fairs of the time. Nestled between two major wars, La Belle Époque was defined by lavish balls held not just in France but all across Europe.
It started though with the Parisian elite, who would dress in their finest haute couture, bringing about trends that would spread throughout Europe. Popular styles indicative of the time included Edwardian suits, ornate blouses, empire waistlines, lavish jewellery, corseted silhouettes, wide-brimmed hats, and naturally, the “Gibson Girl” look (think My Fair Lady or Titanic if you need inspiration). Of course, you don’t have to dress from this specific age, you can come in a costume from any time period you choose, even the distant future if you’re game enough, but if you want to win the Best Dressed competition then get your thinking caps on.
You can expect to enjoy an evening of live music to get you dancing, sumptuous historically themed food, and an incredibly decorated Anzac Hall. Those who have attended our past Balls will hopefully agree that it is a night full of creativity and positivity among our amazing community.
Tickets will be $50 and include the delicious banquet menu, while there will be a drinks bar (with Eftpos available), and a whole host of other treats to enjoy!
