The World War I Featherston Military Camp and a unique collection reflecting life at the Japanese Prisoner of War Camp 1942-1946 are major themes here. Housed in the re-sited Waiorongomai School Hall (1916), this museum is the historical focus of Featherston and district with displays reflecting life from the 1850s.

Also on site are an early settlers' exhibition including a bushman's bivouac, the first courthouse in the Wairarapa in which the first court sat in 1860, and a muck wagon from the Rimutaka tunnel. A working Model A Ford 1933 fire engine and a fell engine reflect early transport technology.

Featherston is twinned with Messines (Belgium) and artefacts, photographs and documents from this town also feature.
