Cult Auckland singer-guitarist Tom Rodwell is best known for his genre-bending rhythm & blues party band Storehouse, but his hard-to-define style and flair for the unexpected has garnered fans and critical respect beyond the roots music world.
Tracks from his most recent album Wood & Waste blend a loose-limbed blues-funk with Afrobeat and Caribbean influences, plus touches of baroque psychedelia and a lyrical taste for the surreal.
For this solo concert, Rodwell will be showcasing some of these original songs – the LP recently finished 7 months of heavy rotation on US radio, and gathering press notice as far afield as Rome, Dublin, Skopje and Lyon – alongside a range of rare and racy calypso, pre-war spirituals and offbeat blues songs.
Unifying this material is Rodwell’s mesmerising rhythm playing, his gigs a bewitchingly groove-centred experience unlike anything else on the circuit.
Light supper included in ticket price. Bar available (cash and eftpos). Cabaret style seating.
